This is a long neglected classic by Donn Byrne, a self-invented Irish-American writer of the 1920s, who strings together a set of romantic tales that revolve around the country house of the title in Ulster. It features some remarkable characters, especially Uncle Valentine McFarland, who I continue to quote decades after reading the book.I bought this copy, of collectable quality complete with dust jacket, as a gift for a friend whose hospitality I had enjoyed at his country house in Ulster that reminded me of Destiny Bay.
Though long out of print this is a book well worth hunting down on Amazon

Mr. Byrne is in a class by himself when it comes to description. I can see the purple heather and the sally on Spanish Man's Rest perfectly. The essence of Irishness is caught in the structure of the text and the activities of the characters. There are several stories here, mainly about the same characters at different stages of their lives. One or two stories are only a couple of pages long and are only so-so. The rest are all very good. The Tale of James Carabine is set in New York. It doesn't have the magic the rest do. Kerry and Uncle Valentine and Aunt Jenepher are respectable characters. Byrne cleverly uses Kerry to say Valentine has passed on in the Tale of Kerry. The whole thought of a gypsy wagon rolling down the hill with a dead woman on board to witness her horse win is shamefully funny. That dealt with a rule my mother didn't even know. When writing about Eire and all its magic, Mr. Byrne is tough to beat.
The editorial review is not truly descriptive of or fair to this remarkable book.
It is actually a collection of short stories dealing with the various members of the MacFarlane family, told by Kerry MacFarlane, the nephew of Sir Valentine MacFarlane (who does not marry a gypsy - that must be Hollywood influence in the film based on the book.) The family has good relations with the local Romany folk, and many of the stories in the book involve them in one way or another, but that is only one aspect of the adventures of the MacFarlane family.
The stories are firmly rooted in the rural life of Northern Ireland in the late 19th or early 20th century, and Byrne has a good ear for the speech of the time and place. But the stories also involve the wanderings of family members and friends to and from New York, the American South, and Monte Carlo - a Spanish nobleman and his supposed grandson looking for the lost treasure of the Armada - a kidnapped Chinese woman - a horse race - a boxing match - a trial for murder - a duel - and an apparent visitation of the Devil to Destiny Bay. (A possible touch of the supernatural is a regular feature of this book.)
Sir Valentine MacFarlane is an irascible old gentleman and eminently quotable. I would give the book 4 and one half stars because - as one might expect in a collection of short stories -not all are of the same quality. But overall it's worthy of 5 stars and well worth reading.
